ORLY KOPPEL was born in 1964 and grew up in Germany, the United States, Holland and England. She attended Wadham College, Oxford, where she received a degree in Modern Languages. She speaks four languages fluently (Hebrew, English, German and Dutch), and has lived in Glasgow for 27 years, where she works as a psychotherapist. Roads Without Shoulders, her first book, is composed of a collection of psychological vignettes, all drawn from her work with clients, and interleaved with a series of seasonal “Interludes” which are, in a sense, accounts of her own personal therapeutic process over many years.

Part memoir, part omnium of riveting case histories, the book is written in a fluent, nuanced, witty and highly literary style. All 52 stories are set in Glasgow, which is implicit in the architecture, atmosphere, weather, language and humour evoked throughout. The combination of an astonishing array of behaviours, inner states, predicaments and sorrows makes this book a highly unique melding of the psychological and artistic.  Many topical themes are covered, including neuro, gender and relationship diversity.
